India is a vast repository of the world’s finest material and cultural heritages namely art, archaeological and ethnological objects, stone sculptures, textiles, manuscripts, miniature paintings, canvas paintings, mural paintings etc. Material heritage conservation comprises of conservation & restoration of artifacts through detailed scientific analysis and evolution of materials undergoing deterioration, to understand and to retard the process of decay.
To restore and conserve these treasures INTACH established its first Conservation Centre at Lucknow in 1985. Over a period of time, conservation centers were established all across the country that provide professional help towards conservation needs for art and heritage collections. All these well-equipped and ace conservation laboratories collectively function as the INTACH Conservation Institutes (ICI) catering to conservation needs for art and heritage collections of their respective regions. Presently, these are located at Lucknow, Delhi, Bangalore, Bhubaneswar, Kolkata, Mumbai and Jodhpur. The ICI is the largest network of conservation centers in the world, recognized by International Council of Museum (ICOM) Rome, Italy.
ICI has been the foremost institution in India to impart training in conservation and has produced many conservators in different field of conservation.
ICI conservators, with a range of specialties conduct research on a variety of materials possessing art or heritage value. It helps formulate recommendations for effective preservation strategies and effective conservation treatments. The results of the treatment are disseminated to our colleagues in the museum community through various programmes that include publications in journals, presentations at national and international conferences, seminars, workshops and through INTACH’s training and education program. ICI has published over 35 books and many articles on several conservation subjects such as paper, manuscript, mural, textile, metal among others.
