Aim and Objective for the Wall Painting Directory

The Wall Painting Directory (WPD) is an initiative to document all known and unknown wall painting sites across the country, generate awareness and facilitate emergency conservation. By listing and cataloguing these sites, the WPD hopes to raise awareness among residents and local communities about the historical value of these assets. Presently, there are minimal available records or data on most wall painting sites in India. The WPD project is an attempt to ensure that information about wall paintings and rock art is recorded and protected for future generations.

The project’s objectives involve a survey, photo-documentation, inventorization, condition assessment, research and editing for the preparation of publication. These books are made available to institutions and the public at large.

The goal of the Wall Painting Directory is to identify the sites possessing wall paintings and persuade the government to formulate policies which can lead to systematic conservation and preservation of wall paintings of the heritage structures. It is required that awareness be created so that citizens respect them with a sense of ownership and care as

‘The heritage does not belong to us; we belong to this heritage’.
