Role of INTACH Chapters and ICI Centers

With a network of more than 180 INTACH Chapters in India and five ICI centres, WPD is provided with essential local information and permissions as required. Additionally, the ICI Centres are actively engaged in survey work and providing conservation expertise for the documentation of these wall painting sites in their respective regions or states.

Work done by INTACH Chapters & ICI Centres:

INTACH Chapters

Bihar State Chapter – shares relevant information regarding historic monuments in Bihar. In addition to this, they also helped in providing an office for the team and guide the WPD survey team about historic monuments and locations.

Delhi State Chapter – shared relevant information regarding historic monuments of Delhi. In addition to this, they guided the WPD survey team regarding historic monuments and locations. It was one of the most active chapters involved in the operations of the survey work in the state. The first publication of WPD was released on Wall Painting Sites in Delhi which became possible due to the efforts of the Chapter.

Himachal Pradesh State Chapter – assisted in conducting training workshops in Himachal University wherein the state WPD team for Himachal was selected and formed. The team then worked on surveying and documenting wall painting sites in Himachal Pradesh. The fruitful efforts led to the release of the publication of Wall Painting Sites in Himachal Pradesh in 2024.

Karnataka State Chapter – shared relevant information regarding historic monuments and probable wall painting sites in Karnataka. In addition to this, they guided the WPD survey team about places and locations.

Madhya Pradesh State Chapter – assisted in organising a training workshop for Madhya Pradesh. In addition to that, they were involved in the survey of the wall painting sites in the state covering 11 districts.

Rajasthan State Chapter – assisted in conducting the training workshop for Rajasthan. The Rajasthan State Chapter was actively involved in the survey work of the state and helped the WPD Survey team by providing necessary information and permissions. The State Chapter, with its commitment to protecting the national heritage, documented over 85% area of the state. Moreover, it also contributed to the publication of the documented sites of the state. The publication on Wall Painting Sites of Rajasthan (Jaipur District) is already available while other publications are in the process.

Uttar Pradesh State Chapter – shared relevant information about historical monuments and potential wall painting sites in Uttar Pradesh. Besides, they guided the WPD survey team regarding places and locations. The Chapter played an active role in the preparation of Wall Painting Sites in the Awadh region of Uttar Pradesh. The publications of three more divisions of Uttar Pradesh are in the process.

Uttarakhand State Chapter – assisted in conducting the training workshops for the sites of Uttarakhand. The State Chapter played an active role in operations during survey work and helped the WPD survey team in documenting the wall painting sites. With its zeal to protect the national heritage, the survey and documentation work in Uttarakhand was completed on time. Furthermore, they were involved in the publication of the documented sites of the state. With due efforts, the Wall Painting Sites of Uttarakhand now stand published.

ICI Centre

Bengaluru – is overseeing the survey work in Karnataka and is coordinating with various INTACH chapters across the state. The WPD state team for Karnataka is located within the centre. The Bengaluru Centre provides its expertise and resources for the documentation and research work to its WPD team.

Bhubaneswar – coordinates the survey work in Odisha.

Delhi – the Head Office is in Delhi. The expert conservators of the Centre assisted in developing the initial wall painting template for the WPD project. The Centre plays an active role in raising awareness about the WPD project.

Lucknow – the Centre coordinates survey work in Uttar Pradesh with various INTACH chapters within the state and facilitates necessary permission from authorities.

Kolkata – coordinates the survey work in Kolkata.

Conservation Insights 2020 Lectures

INTACH Conservation Institutes organised the online ‘Conservation Insights 2020’ lecture series from June to December 2020. This publication, a compilation of selected lectures from the ‘Conservation Insights 2020’ series, represents another step towards sharing and dissemination of knowledge. The lectures cover a wide range of issues related to philosophy of conservation, preventive conservation, building conservation and the tools and techniques used in examination and conservation of different materials. The subject matter is an invaluable contribution to the field and useful to practising professionals, researchers and students in the field of heritage management.
