About ICI Kolkata

INTACH Conservation Institute, Kolkata is situated at 4C, Chapel Road, Hastings, Kolkata – 700 022 from where it has been operating since 2006. Establishing a conservation centre in Kolkata was a long-cherished dream of Dr. O.P. Agrawal, the then Director General of ICCI. He is regarded as the pioneer of conservation, preservation movement in India. He started a small office in 75 C, Park Street, Kolkata in 1993.

However, conservation work was taken up in right earnest when the Calcutta Club’s painting collection was offered to INTACH for conservation. This work was carried out in the premises of the club itself where a room was provided for setting up the laboratory. After the completion of this assignment, the centre was established under the able guidance of Dr. O.P.Agrawal in 2005 at 240B, A.J.C. Bose Road, Kolkata – 700 020, at the heart of the city.
The Institute has trained and experienced conservators along with dedicated staff members and a well-equipped Conservation Laboratory, carrying out conservation of all types of heritage objects like manuscripts, sculptures, paintings on canvas, paper, wood, lithographs, archival materials including photographs, textiles, murals, ethnological objects, animal skins, stone, metal etc. as well as wall paintings. Besides, other art objects holding historical and cultural significance are preserved for posterity.
The main aim of the centre has been to administer meticulous care and upkeep of the rich material heritage of the country. Its objective is not to return objects to their original appearance, but to strive to preserve what remains of the original in a coherent way for future generations. The centre has also conducted training and capacity building workshops from time to time at the Indian Museum as well as Kala Bhavan, Vishwa Bharati among other prominent institutions.
